glucose Flashcards
what is so important about glucose
glucose = most important carbohydrate, is our primary
energy source, some cell types require glucose as an energy source
what is glucose used for
can be converted to glycogen, starch, sucrose and lipids for storage of energy
used to form pyruvate, lactate and ribose-5-phosphate
how does glucose get transported into cells
through Na+/glucose symporters
through passive facilitated diffusion glucose transporters(GLUT1,2,3,4,5)
describe the process of glucose entering cell via GLUT1
glucose binds to outwards facing binding site, triggers conformational change, binding site faces inwards, glucose released into cell, conformational change regenerates and returns to original position
