GLP-1 & GIP Receptor Agonists Flashcards
What is the main action of the
GLP-1 Receptor Agonist?
They are called incretin memetics and they:
increase insulin release with food
slow gastric emptying
promote satiety
suppress glucagon
What are examples of GLP- RA?
exenatide (Byetta)
exenatide XR (Bydureon)
liraglutide (Victoza)
dulaglutide (Trulicity)
lixisenatide (Adlyxin)
semaglutide (Ozempic - injection) and (Rybelsus - oral tablet)
What are side effects of GLP-1 RAs?
Nausea, vomiting, weight loss, injection site reaction. Signs of acute pancreatitis (severe abdominal pain and vomiting) need to be reported. Dose is increased monthly to achieve targets.
What is the black box warning for GLP-1 RAs?
Thyroid C cell tumor warning (avoid if history of medullary thyroid tumor).
Which GLP-1 RAs significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular death?
liraglutide (Victoza), dulaglutide (Trulicity) and semaglutide (Ozempic)
What GLP -1 RA is approved for pediatrics from 10-17 years old?
exenatide XR (Bydureon) and liraglutide (Victoza)
How much can GLP-1 RAs lower A1C?
Lowers A1C by 0.5-1.6%
How much weight loss can result from GLP-1 RAs?
4-6% weight loss
