Didactic
Intended to teach (negative conotation)
The students were bored of the teachers didactic teaching.
Digression
That portion of discourse that wanders or departs from the main subject or topic.
But I digress = Lets get back to the main topic.
Dionysian
Relating to emotional, sensual, feelings.
Similar to apollonian but emotion instead of order.
Dramatic irony
A circumstance in which the audience or reader knows more about a situation than a character.
john goes into house but the audience knows the killer is in the house.
Elegy
A poem or prose selection that laments or mediates on the passing or death of someone or something of value.
Better be loved and lost than never loved at all.
Ellipsis
Three periods (…) indicating the omission of words in a thought or quotation.
Erm… your gonna want to see this…
Elliptical construction
A sentence containing a deliberate omission of words
Andy plays basketball well, and so does Ken
Empathy
A feeling of association or identification with an object or person.
People brought a family favorite dish after hearing of a family loss.
Epic
A narrative poem that tells of the adventures and exploits of a hero.
Heroic story
Epigram
A concise but ingenious, witty, and thoughtful statement.
No gains without pains
Euphony
Nice harmony of sounds
Opposite of cacophony
Epithet
An adjective or phrase that expresses a striking quality of a person or thing.
Wine dark sea, someone the great.
