Messianic secret
a theme in Mark’s Gospel, particularly Jesus’ repeated injunctions to those he heals to keep quiet about his mighty deeds.
Mikveh (pI. mikva’ot)
a stepped pool for Jewish ritual purification rites.
Mishnah
the oral Law commenting on the Torah that was put into writing around A.D. 200.
Mystery religion
secretive religious practice in the Roman period by which practitioners were joined to the life of the god and in some way reborn.
Narrative Christology
Answers the Christological question through a selective presentation of stories about Jesus.
Natural knowledge of God
doctrinal term for those things about God revealed in creation; also applied to the sense of right and wrong which God has placed in all people’s hearts.
Norm
a rule or standard by which other things are judged; Scripture norms what we believe and teach about God.
Now/not yet
phrase used to describe elements of New Testament theology which are now already present and experienced by believers but which are yet to be fully realized. For example, Christ has come and ushered in the kingdom. Yet Christ will come again and bring it to complete fulfillment.
Offspring/seed
related to the promise to Abraham and his offspring.
Once saved, always saved
the teaching that if people are true believers, they will not and cannot fall away from the faith.
Paraclete
the “comforter”; name for the Holy Spirit in the Fourth Gospel; also used for Jesus in the Johannine epistles.
Parable
stories told by” Jesus using common metaphors to describe what “the kingdom of God is like.
Parousia
means “presence” or “appearing”; drawn from its use of the arrival of a Roman emperor or other dignitary, it came to be a technical term for the second coming of Christ.
Passover
Jewish pilgrimage festival at the beginning of the wheat harvest commemorating the Exodus from Egypt.
Pastoral Epistles
1 Timothy, Titus, and 2 Timothy.
