ANC: African National Congress
Formed in 1912 to protest against racial discrimination and campaign for equal treatment.
AWB: Afrikaner Resistance Movement
Established in 1973 to oppose government reform that was perceived to undermine Afrikaner culture and political power.
Bantu
Means all black Africans, used by apartheid supporters
Bantustans
Rural reserves established in 1959 by the National Party. Created to provide black Africans with a place to live and to encourage tribal identities among communities. Africans who were legal residents of these ‘homelands’ were denied political rights in the urban areas of South Africa.
Boer
Afrikaans word meaning ‘farmer’ used to describe Dutch settlers and their descendants in South Africa
BOSS: Bureau of State Security
Established in 1969.Essentially South African secret police.
CODESA: Convention for a Democratic South Africa
Multi-party conference called in 1991 to determine the process from apartheid to multiculturalism

IFP: Inkatha Freedom Party
Organised as a Zulu cultural organisation and transformed into a political party by Chief Buthelezi in the late 1980s.
National Party
Formed in 1914 by JBM Hertzog in opposition to the Botha-Smuts South African Party (SAP) to represent the interest of Afrikaners.
PFP: Progressive Federal Party
Formed in 1977 to represent the views of English speaking white voters opposed to apartheid
SACP: South African Communist Party
Established in 1921. Outlawed under the Suppression of Communism Act of 1950. Worked with the ANC to end apartheid. Unbanned in 1990
SADF: South African Defence Force
