Validity
The accuracy of a theory or study
Internal Validity
Whether the study is measuring what it claims to measure
External Validity
The extent to which a study represents real life
Ecological Validity
The extent to which a study’s setting or task reflects that of real life
Temporal Validity
The extent to which the study reflects today’s society
Generalizability
The extent to which the sample of a study reflects the target population
Reliability
How consistent a study is
Objective
Not affected by the personal feelings or experiences of the researcher (subjective is the opposite)
Social Desirability Bias
Changing your answers to gain social approval or to try and support the aim of a study
Socially Sensitive Research
When a study upsets/offends the target population, which may lead to the group being marginalized
Imposed Etic
When a researcher gathers research in a different culture to their own and brings with them the belief of their own culture to draw conclusions
Culture Bias
The tendency to judge people in terms of one’s own cultural assumptions
Beta Bias
When theory or research minimises the differences between genders
