Glossary from 2P Flashcards
Land immediately
Execute a landing without delay
Land as soon as possible
Execute a landing at the first site a safe landing can be made
Land as soon as practicable
Extended flight is not recommended. Landing sight and duration of flight are at the discretion of the Pilot in Command
Shall
used only when application of a procedure is mandatory
Should
used only when application of a procedure is recommended
May and Need Not
used only when application of a procedure is optional
Will
indicates futurity and never indicates any degree of requirement for application of a procedure
Check
Visually observe circuit breaker condition. Do not change condition
Pull
If circuit breaker is in, pull the circuit breaker out. If circuit breaker is out, do not change condition
Reset
If circuit breaker is out, push circuit breaker in. If circuit breaker is in, do not change condition
Cycle
If circuit breaker is in, pull the circuit breaker out, and then push circuit breaker back in. If circuit breaker is out, do not change condition
CAUTION for Circuit Breakers
Popped circuit breakers may be reset only once. Holding in a circuit breaker while resetting may cause electrical fire or damage to electrical equipment.
MADCD
The following should be performed for all emergencies:
- Maintain control of the aircraft
- Alert the crew
- Determine the precise nature of the problem
- Complete the appropriate emergency procedure or take action appropriate for the problem
- Determine landing criteria and land as required.
Hazard
A condition with the potential to cause personal injury or death, property damage, or mission degradation
Operational Necessity
A mission associated with war or peacetime operations in which the consequences of an action justify accepting the risk of loss of aircraft and crew
Pilot in command
The pilot assigned responsibility for the safe and orderly conduct of the flight
Risk
an expression of loss in terms of severity and probability
Actual Instrument Conditions
Conditions external to the aircraft in flight that do not permit visual reference to the horizon
Flight
- For operational purposes, a flight is one or more aircraft proceeding on a common mission
- For Helos, a flight begins when the aircraft lifts from a rest point or commences ground taxi and ends after airborne flight when the rotors are disengaged or the aircraft has been stationary for 5 mins with rotors engaged
Instrument Time
Portion of pilot time in either day or night under actual or simulated instrument conditions
Carrier Control Area
A circular airspace within a radius of 50nm around the carrier, extending upward from the surface to infinity, under control of CATCC except for those a/c operating under control of the air officer during Case I and II operations. NOTE: the radius and height may be limited because of adjacent controlled airspace
Carrier Control Zone
The airspace within a circular limit defined by 5 miles horizontal radius from the carrier, extending upward from the surface to and including 2,500’ unless otherwise designated for special operations, and is under the cognizance of the air officer during VMC
