Glossary For Test Two Flashcards
Circadian Rhythm
Innate cycle of fluctuation in physiological and behavioral functions.
Alpha waves
EEG waveform seen mostly during relaxed wake time while eyes are closed. Frequency is 8-13Hz
CPAP
Continuous positive airway pressure. Therapy used for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea
Electrode
Conductive device applied to scape or body to record natural bio-electrical signals.
Electroencephalogram (EEG)
Technique for measuring the electrical activity of the brain
Electroencephalogram EEG
Technique for measuring the electrical activity of brain
Electrooculography EOG
Technique for measuring resting potential for the retina. resulting signal called electrooculogram. Main applications are in aphthalmological diagnosis and in recording eye movement.
Electromyographic EMG
Technique for measuring the electrical activity generated by a muscle.
Frequency
Number of waveforms occurring within one second. Measured in cycles per second or hertz (Hz)
Galvanometer
Instrument for detecting or measuring a small electrical current by movements of magnetic needle of of a coil in a magnetic field.
K-complex
(Disturbance patterns) sharp negative deflection followed by a slower positive deflection in EEG recordings. Indicator of stage N2 (NREM2) sleep.
Mastoid
Lower part of the bone behind the ear.
MSLT
Multiple Sleep Latency Test- sleep study performed during the day in which the patient takes a series of short naps approximated 20 min long at a 2 hour intervals.
Narcolepsy
Disorder of unknown etiology which is characterized by excessive sleepiness and inability to stay awake.
NREM
Non REM sleep stage
