Academic Writing
A verb that conveys a physical action typically involving movement.
Action Verb
A word that modifies a noun.
Adjective
Writing that takes a clear position on a debatable question, and backs up claims with
evidence and reasoning.
Argumentative Mode
The reader of a text, which can be intended (targeted by the author) or unintended (not
specifically targeted by the author).
Audience
Techniques to generate thinking in order to clarify thoughts and ideas.
Brainstorming
Paragraphs that tell what happened in the order in which the events occurred.
Chronological Paragraphs
A group of words that includes a subject and a verb.
Clause
A punctuation symbol used in multiple ways to indicate a pause or a particular organization.
Comma
A grammatically incorrect sentence in which a comma separates two or more independent
clauses.
Comma Splice
A sentence that contains two or more independent clauses.
Compound Sentence
A sentence that either summarizes the paragraph or creates a transition to the next
paragraph
Concluding Sentence
A word or phrase that connects parts of a sentence.
Conjunction
A conjunction that connects two independent clauses in a compound sentence.
Coordinating Conjunction
A clause that cannot stand on its own as a sentence.
