Glossary Flashcards
An experiment in a controlled environment that can be easily repeated
Laboratory experiment
An experiment done in a not controlled environment
Field experiment
An experiment with a naturally occurring independent variable
Quasi experiment
A variable that changes and are both measured
Independent variable
What the experiment is measuring
Dependent variable
A variable the experimenter can’t control or something that will effect the results
Extraneous variable
What type of experiment is it, is it in a controlled environment or not?
Experimental condition
Where a different participant is used for the other IV
Independent measures design
Where the same participant is used for both IV’s
Repeated measures design
When different participants are used but the experimenter tries to match them in age and similarities
Matched group designs
Everything that stays the same each time the experiment is ran
Controls
If the same participant is used again and they will perform better as the done the same thing before
Order effects
Where a participant is aware of the true purpose of the experiment and acts differently to what they would naturally act
Demand characteristics
Where the participant doesn’t know what group they are in
Single blind
Where the experimenter and participant doesn’t know what group the participant is in
Double blind
Where someone states there will always be a significant change
Alternative hypothesis
Where the hypothesis states that there will be no effect of the IV’s on the dependent variable
Null hypothesis
An hypothesis with a direction
Two tailed hypothesis
A hypothesis which is simple without a direction
One tailed hypothesis
What type of participants the experimenter wants and will try to obtain
Target population
Where the experimenter will go and ask people specifically if they want to take part in the experiment
Opportunity sampling
Where the experimenters put out a poster or statement and the participants will decide to come
Self selected sampling
Where random people are asked by the experimenter not based on the target population
Random sample
Where the experimenter asks the participants to ask their friends and family and them to do the same so the chain continues
Snowball sample
