drawing stick or pencil, usually gray in colour, in varying thickness, used for collage, collograph and construction projects
colour

composition made by arranging and gluing materials to a flat surface
complementary colours
colours found opposite each other on the colour wheel; yellow and violet
contour drawing
a line drawing delineating the contours or edges of an object
easel
a frame to support an artist’s canvas
engraving
a process of incising or scratching into a hard surface to produce an image
fire
in ceramics, to bake clay in a kiln
grout
a filler such as plaster rubbed in between clay or glass tesserae in a mosaic
glaze
a transparent or semitransparent coating of a colour stain over a plain surface or other colour
hue
another word for ‘colour’
kiln
an oven for drying, firing and glazing clay
line
an element of art
mobile
a free-moving construction in space
mosaic
a design or composition made by arranging and pasting tesserae or cut out shapes of material next to each other on a background surface
oil pastel
a kind of pastel for colouring. Combines qualities of both chalk and oil
paper mâché
name given to paper crafts utilizing newsprint paper moistened with wallpaper paste or laundry starch
pattern
design made by repeating a motif or symbol
still life
an arrangement of objects usually on a table as a subject for drawing, painting
tempera paint
an opaque, water-soluble paint. Available in liquid or power form. Also called showcard or poster paint
Texture
the actual and or visual feel of a surface
Positive-Negative
Positive shapes in a composition or painting are the solid objects, the people, the trees, buildings. Negative shapes are the unoccupied or empty shapes between the positive shapes
Primary colours
The three basic hues; red, yellow, blue
Relief
a projection of something from a surface. Shallow relief as in a coin. Used to describe plaster relief
Secondary colours
Achieved by mixing primary colours; green, orange, violet
Shade
refers to the darker value of a colour. Maroon is a shade of red
Slip
clay thinned with water to a creamy consistency. Used as binder between two pieces of clay when modeling. Slip, coloured or white, called engobe, can be used to decorate greenware
Sketch
usually preliminary drawing made with pencil, pen, chalk, crayon charcoal
Tint
refers to the lighter values of colour. Pink is a tint of red
Value
in colour, the lightness or darkness of the hue
Watercolours
watersoluble colours. Usually transparent or semitransparent. Available in semimoist cakes or tubes
