Glossary Flashcards
tendons
the soft tissue by which muscle attaches to bone.
joints
sites where bone meets bone, classified to the amount of movement they permit
ligaments
cross over joints and connect bone to bone
how muscles produce movement?
Muscles can only contract (shorten) which results in their tendons pulling on a bone.
Once a muscle has contracted to produce a movement, it can only return to its original position through the action of another muscle. Because of this reason, muscles are arranged in antagonistic pairs.
Fast twitch/white
rapid contraction high force production poor muscle endurance anaerobic energy pathway 100m spint, long jump, weight lifting
slow twitch/red
slow contraction low force production good muscle endurance aerobic energy marathon
Agonist/prime mover
the muscle which contracts/produces the movement
antagonist
the muscle which producers the opposite action to that of the prime mover. it relaxes when the agonist is contracting
origin
The point where the muscles tendon joins to the stationary bone when movement is produced
insertion
The point where the muscles tendon joins to the moving bone when movement is produced.
