Glomerular filtration Flashcards
What are the functional units of the kidney?
Nephrons
what is the Renal corpuscle made of
glomerulus - capillaries in kidney
bowman’s capsule - cup
what does the tubule consist of/
- pct
- loop of henle
- dct
what are the afferent arterioles
-blood vessel coming into the kidney
what is the name of the blood vessel that leaves the kidney
-efferent arteriole
where does the glomerulus sit
-in the bowman’s capsule
what is the function of the nephron
-looks at chemical composition of filtrate and decides what to keep and what not to keep
what are the two layers of the B.C.
- visceral layer - touches glomerulus
- paretal layer - outside of B.C.
How many layers does the plasma pass to get to the B.C.
3 layers
what are the name of the three layers
- capillary endothelium
- basement membrane
- podocytes
what are their functions
- C.E. - have small pores - enables faster passing and also due to fenestration and Hydrostatic pressure .
- B.M. - lot of negative charge on it. proteins also have negative charge and so repels B.M. and can’t pass through.
- podocytes - extends arms - make sure every bit of capillary is covered.
is afferent wider than efferent?
-yes
what is proteinuria
- protein in the urine
- filter isn’t working properly
- diabetes - high levels of glucose in the blood damages the filter
- sugar also corrodes the endothelium
- high B.P. - already high HP due to afferent and efferent arteriole. this is higher therefore capillaries and structures damaged in filter.
