Glock 17 safety precautions
1 Identify a safe direction
2 Finger outside the trigger guard. Aim the pistol in that safe direction
3 Remove the magazine (if fitted) and physically check the magazine well
4 Lock the slide to the rear
5 Remove the chamber safety device (if fitted)
6 Carry out two visual and physical checks of the chamber and magazine well
7 Release the slide forward
Glock 17 pre op checks
1 Receiver
- pins in place
- visual check for obvious damage
2 Slide
- sights secure and undamaged / check luminosity
- visual check for obvious damage
3 Magazines
- floor plates secure and the magazines undamaged
- check the number, type and alignment of ammunition
Glock 17 load
1 First magazine - place the magazine into the ammunition pouch
2 Second magazine - insert the magazine and tug on the base to ensure it is fully
seated
Teaching point: Best practice is to load the magazine into the pistol while holstered
Glock 17 action
1 Identify a safe direction
2 Finger outside the trigger guard. Aim the pistol in that safe direction
3 Rack the slide and chamber a round
4 Pull slide part way to rear , look into breach, confirm round is chambered
(press check)
5 Finger outside the trigger guard, recover the pistol to the holster.
6 Fasten the retaining devices
7 Sweep the area around the holster to ensure the pistol grip is not obstructed
Glock 17 draw
1 Establish Grip, releasing the retaining devices, ensure the support hand is in contact with the body
2 Clear the pistol from the holster, keeping the finger outside the trigger guard
3 Lock the wrist so the pistol is pointing forwards
4 Ready: Establish a two-handed grip
5 Sights: Push the pistol forward and upward into the line of sight - keeping the
finger outside the trigger guard
Teaching point: This process outlines the draw into the “aim”. Circumstances
could equally require that the weapon is drawn from the holster and brought to the
“sul” or “ready” position.
Glock 17 immediate action drill (first failure to fire)
1 Finger off the trigger and placed outside the trigger guard
2 Tap the base of the magazine
3 Roll the pistol to the right
4 Rack the slide and chamber a fresh round
5 Finger outside the trigger guard; Reassess
Glock 17 stoppage drill (second failure to fire)
1 Finger off the trigger and placed outside the trigger guard.
2 Tilt and observe the breach to determine the cause of the obstruction
3 Lock the slide to the rear
4 Rip the magazine off the weapon
5 Roll the weapon to the right
6 If necessary, work the slide or physically clear any obstruction
7 Reload with a new magazine. Tap and tug to ensure it is seated
8 Rack the slide and chamber a fresh round
9 Finger outside the trigger guard; Reassess
Teaching point: Officers may chose to transition to another tactical option and/or
seek cover
Glock 17 recover
1 Finger outside the trigger guard
2 Bring the pistol back to the lock position
3 Place the support hand on the body
4 Finger outside the trigger guard, recover the pistol to the holster.
5 Fasten the retaining devices
6 Sweep the area around the holster to ensure the pistol grip is not obstructed
Glock 17 unload
1 Identify a safe direction
2 Remove the magazine from the pistol while still in the holster
3 Finger outside the trigger guard, draw and aim the pistol in the safe direction
4 Roll the weapon to the right
5 Lock the slide to the rear, ejecting any rounds
6 Carry out two visual and physical checks of the chamber and magazine well
7 Insert a chamber safety device (if applicable)
8 Release the slide forward and secure the pistol
Teaching point: ease the slide forward if a chamber safety device is fitted.
9 Return / secure magazines and ammunition

1 Receiver
- pins in place
- visual check for obvious damage
2 Slide
- sights secure and undamaged / check luminosity
- visual check for obvious damage
3 Magazines
- floor plates secure and the magazines undamaged
- check the number, type and alignment of ammunition
Glock 17 serviceability
check

1 Field strip the weapon.
2 Receiver
a. pins
b. slide stop lever
c. ejector
d. trigger safety
e. magazine catch
f. visual check for obvious damage
3 Slide
a. foresight for security, damage, luminosity
b. rear sight security, damage, luminosity
c. extractor - serviceability
d. depress the firing pin safety and check for free movement and serviceability
e. visual check for obvious damage
4 Barrel
a. check bore for any obstructions or obvious faults / damage
b. check feeding ramp and chamber clean
5 Reassemble pistol and rack the slide to confirm correct assembly
6 Lights (if fitted)
a. check security and serviceability
7 Magazines
a. check floor plate is secure, the follower is located and the magazine is undamaged
Glock 17 function test
This is carried out
after cleaning and
maintenance
This is best carried
out by a competent
person
1 Identify a safe direction
2 Finger outside the trigger guard. Aim the pistol in that safe direction
3 Operate the trigger and hold to the rear
4 Rack the slide and attain trigger reset
5 Fit an empty magazine to the pistol
6 Rack the pistol (The slide should remain locked to the rear). Repeat for all
magazines
7 Remove magazine and release the slide forward
Glock 17 holster states
Locked down:
The holster is in the locked down condition when both the hammer strap is up and holster lock is engaged. The holster should be in this condition when it is in the vehicle safe.
Secure:
The holster is in the secure condition when the hammer strap is up and the holster lock is disengaged. To disengage the holster lock push it backwards with your thumb.
Grip:
The holster is in the grip state when both the hammer strap and holster lock are disengaged. Disengage the hammer strap by pushing down on the thumb break and pushing the strap forward with your thumb. You should always keep your hand on your weapon when in the grip condition.
The holster should only be in this state when you are ready to draw the Glock from the holster.
