Q

What is the role of the government

A
  • Plan, set aside land for tourism, build infrastructure (roads)
  • Law and order to ensure the safety of tourists
  • Set up National Organisation to active marketing the tourist destination
    • Singapore Tourism Board(STB) has partnered Korean studio (for 3yrs) to film Korean Dramas in Singapore in order to promote Singapore as a tourist destination for South Koreans, and other regions through the production of Kdramas in Singapore.

-Encourage domestic tourism during COVID-19 where air travel is limited by giving out S$100 vouchers for locals to explore and rediscover Singapore, boosting local tourism.

HOWEVER, not all governments promote tourism.
Governments can restrict tourism by implementing strict travel requirements.

For example, tourists to North Korea must obtain a visa and authorization from the North Korean government and can only be part of an organized tour from an approved agency before they can even visit and travel to NK.

Q

What is the role of the media (raise awareness)

A

News and information can be communicated via different forms of media: printed, televised or social media, or internet.
Reports on new attractions in a destination or positive reviews of the quality facilities and services by travel websites such as Tripadvisor or travel writers can help promote tourism of destination.

Positive news about Singapore’s attractions
For example, the newly opened Changi Jewel Airport houses the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. The attraction made headlines in many news reports across the world. CNBC even filmed a show in front of the waterfall in Jewel. The show was broadcasted live worldwide.

HOWEVER, while positive media reports about the destination can encourage tourists to visit, negative media reports on the destination can discourage tourists.
For example. in 2019, violent riots broke out in Hong Kong where hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets to protest. The media shared images of riots, damages, injuries and portrayed HOng Kong as unsafe. As a result, tourists would not visit Hong Kong as they fear for their own safety and do not want to endanger their lives.

Q

What is the role of an international organization

A

International organizations are formed by a group of countries with the goal of providing leadership, support, and advice to countries regarding different matters. (UNESCO)

Example
Monetary assistance to restore heritage sites
The Borobudur temple has been through ten centuries of neglect and was only rediscovered in 1815, after being well buried under volcanic ashes.
In the 1970s, the Indonesia Governent and UNESCO worked together with UNESCO providing expertise and funding to restore BoroBudur Temple to its former glory.
Since then, Borobudur Temple, a UNESCO site, has attracted more than 2.5 million visitors annually from different parts of the world and is one of Indonesia and the world’s most valuable treasures.

HOWEVER, not all International Organizations promote tourism.
World Health Organization (WHO) provides leadership on health matters. WHO may issue travel advisories to not travel to some destinations where there may be widespread diseases in an area. This would not promote tourism in these areas and may even affect its tourist rate even after the disease is in control.
