Define what a tourist is?
Tourists are people who travel and stay away from their normal place of residence for more than
24 hours.
For purposes such as leisure, education, and business but less than one consecutive year.
Describe domestic and international tourism. Types of destination in terms of scale.
Domestic Tourism
-Tourism within a tourist’s own country. ETC. ( A person traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto in Japan. )
International Tourism
-Tourism outside of the tourist’s own country. ETC. ( A Singaporean traveling from Singapore to Japan. )
Describe short-haul and long-haul. Types of destination in terms of travel time.
Short-Haul
-Destinations that can be reached within 5 hours of travel time.
Long-Haul
-Destinations that are far and require more than just 5 hours of travel time.

Describe the Characteristics of Honeypot Tourism( places of Scenic Beauty)
- Honeypot tourism offers opportunities for honeypot tourism. Many of Earth’s natural environments such as mountains, valleys, have become major tourism destinations.
- Leisure purpose, for families, couples, and friends looking to enjoy a short break during the holidays
- Examples of honeypot tourism:
Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, USA(North America) Grand Canyon National Park is a UNESCO world heritage site that displays geological rocks that dated back 2 billion years ago.
Describe the characteristics of Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Events(MICE) facilities
(Places with good facilities)
MICE locations tend to have venues that can host large-scale events such as meetings and convention halls.
MICE locations support infrastructure and services such as hotels and retail shop
MICE locations are usually found along international air routes such as in Singapore.
The purpose is for business/work, for businessmen traveling to attend to work-related matters.
Changi Exhibition Centre, Singapore(Asia)
-Singapore has hosted many large-scale events such as the Singapore Airshow, the biennial aerospace event that involves many foreign delegates and was held at Changi Exhibition Centre.
Generates more than 300 million of spending each time.
Describe the characteristics of Medical Tourism
Places with good facilities
Medical tourism refers to when people travel to a destination to undergo medical procedures that are
surgical in nature to restore their health.
The purpose of medical tourism is for people who require medical attention involving surgery, they travel due to avoid high costs of medical treatment and long waiting periods in their home country. Also to gain better quality medical care that may not be available in their own country.
Examples of medical tourism are:
South Korea, Seoul (Asia), people travel to South Korea to go through plastic surgery due to the country having a reputation for high-quality plastic surgeries.

Places with good facilities
Theme parks are usually places with amusement park settings or attractions that have a central subject or theme, such as the movies.
Leisure purposes, families, couples, or friends to have fun

Places with rich culture
People travel to locations to experience different cultures and to understand the history of the place.
Some of these locations are declared as UNESCO( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) world heritage sites for their cultural significance and are legally protected for future generations to enjoy.
Leisure, the cultural and educational purposes for travelers interested in learning about the culture of the place.
Machu Picchu, Peru (South America)
Machu Picchu today consists of mountainous landscapes and ancient ruins of the Inca Empire that fell in the 16th century.

Places with rich culture
These locations gain popularity after being featured in famous films.
Leisure, cultural and educational purpose, for travelers who are interested to relive the images portrayed by the movies
Singapore(Asia)
Singapore is featured in the 2019 romantic film, Crazy Rich Asians, famous for landmarks such as Marina Bay Sands was featured to showcase Singapore’s infrastructure. Due to this, many tourists are attracted to Singapore to view its infrastructure.
Describe the characteristics of Pilgrimage tourism
Places with rich culture
Pilgrimage involves journeys to sacred places that are important to a person’s beliefs or faiths. This may take place on religious holidays where people travel to take part in religious worship.
The spiritual or religious purpose for those who seek to deepen their faith
Vatican City (Europe) Vatican City is a sacred place of pilgrimage for Roman Catholics as it is the home of the Pope, the spiritual head of the Roman Catholic Church. Roman Catholics around the world visit the Vatican to hear the Pope speak publicly on Wednesdays in Saint Peter's Square.
Describe the characteristics of Dark Tourism
Places of conflict
This type of tourism involves traveling to sites historically associated with death and tragedy.
The educational purpose for travelers interested to know more about historical events involving death and tragedy.
Aokigahara, Japan is the location of the infamous suicide forest.
Types of tourist activities (in terms of tourist activities)
Mass Tourism
- Tourist activities that involve a large number of tourists visiting an attraction together.
- Mass tourism can take the form of package holidays where tourists usually sign up with an agency, travel in large groups, and follow an itinerary.
Niche Tourism
-Tourist activities that are based on special interests or special needs.

Pilgrimage to Mecca is strictly allowed for Muslims only. Non-muslims are not allowed to enter the city or participate in the rituals.

What is the role of the government
- Plan, set aside land for tourism, build infrastructure (roads)
- Law and order to ensure the safety of tourists
- Set up National Organisation to active marketing the tourist destination
- Singapore Tourism Board(STB) has partnered Korean studio (for 3yrs) to film Korean Dramas in Singapore in order to promote Singapore as a tourist destination for South Koreans, and other regions through the production of Kdramas in Singapore.
-Encourage domestic tourism during COVID-19 where air travel is limited by giving out S$100 vouchers for locals to explore and rediscover Singapore, boosting local tourism.
HOWEVER, not all governments promote tourism.
Governments can restrict tourism by implementing strict travel requirements.
For example, tourists to North Korea must obtain a visa and authorization from the North Korean government and can only be part of an organized tour from an approved agency before they can even visit and travel to NK.
