Q

On September 11, 2001, the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes. What were their targets?

A

Two planes were to fly directly into the World Trade Center buildings in downtown Manhattan. Both attacks were successful, and the Twin Towers fell that morning.

Two other planes were directed at the Pentagon and the White House. While the Pentagon attack was a success, passengers on the fourth plane, Flight 93, fought back and the plane crashed in Pennsylvania.

9-11 marked the deadliest of attacks by Islamist fundamentalists who had long been angry with the United States.

Q

How does the internet affect problems related to geographic distance?

A

Because of instantaneous communication, people have been able to communicate and spread their ideas much faster and to more people, than ever before. So technology like radios, cell phones, and the internet, have reduced problems of geographic distance, such as wait time when communicating.

As such, it can be said that the internet is metaphorically decreasing geographic distance, helping to accelerate the process of globalization itself.

16
Q

What is the Green Revolution?

A

It is a revolution in agriculture, leading to tremendous amounts of food being grown in order to feed the world’s growing population.

17
Q

It took humans, as a species, about 200,000 years to reach a population of 1.5 Billion people. In the past 125 years, the population has grown by an additional 6 Billion people.

What technologies helped to feed the growing population of earth?

A

The use of chemical pesticides and genetically modified forms of agriculture helped to feed the exploding population of our species.

Both the usage of pesticides and genetically modified organisms have increased agricultural productivity. Because the amount of change in how we grow agriculture has been so fast and tremendous, we have called this the Green Revolution.

18
Q

What medical innovations have allowed humans to survive and live longer lives?

A

Vaccines and Antibiotics have both saved millions of lives throughout the 20th and 21st Centuries.

19
Q

What are some specific examples of vaccines which have proven to be effective since 1900?

A

Smallpox vaccine was especially useful since 1900, as the disease was eradicated by 1980.

TDAP Vaccine includes protection against Tetanus, Diptheria, and Pertussis, developed in 1949. This short is given multiple times throughout a baby’s first year.

COVID Vaccine (which killed more than 4 million globally from late 2019 to mid-2021) has saved an estimated 20 million lives, in its first year of existence, according to mathematical models from a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases

20
Q

What populations worldwide are still plagued by diseases that more developed countries, like the United States, have already eradicated?

A

People living in LDC (less developed countries) are much more likely to encounter dangerous pathogens. Every year, around 85,000 children under 15 years die due to a lack of clean drinking water or proper hygiene facilities.

21
Q

Why are 235 children dying every single day on Earth from lack of clean drinking water or lack of clean restrooms?

A

Due to the exploitation of the land and the resources by Europeans during the colonization period, which lasted for centuries in some parts of the world. Europeans are not the only ones to blame. There has been a lack of global leadership in resolving a problem that many people worldwide do not see as “their problem”.

22
Q

What effects have humans had on the forests since 1900?

A

The United Nations in 2020 said that about 3.9 billion trees have been cut over the past 100 years. This does not count trees planted by humans, these are “old growth” trees that grew in forests worldwide.

23
Q

What’s causing the Earth’s temperature to currently rise?

A

Human activity, specifically, the burning of greenhouse gases.

Since 1900, the Earth has increased in temperature by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius).

As of this writing, in 2022, scientists expect an extra 4 degrees Celsius increase in warming by 2100 unless something is done to stop the burning of greenhouse gases.

24
Q

What type of economic policies were embraced by economies around the world after the End of the Cold War?

A

“Free-Market” policies and “economic liberalization”.

These sorts of policies encourage deregulation in various industries to the benefit of transnational corporations and their shareholders.

Proponents of free market policies argue that these companies create jobs, and therefore, governments are responsible for decreasing the number of rules that these businesses have to follow.

25
Q

What’s a free-trade agreement?

A

It’s an agreement among countries not to tax the products from other countries that are participating in the free trade agreement.

The opposite of free trade is enacting tariffs on imported products. A tariff is a tax, and enacting a tariff typically hurts everyone involved.

26
Q

If tariffs “hurt everyone involved”, then why do governments enact them?

A

Tariffs are designed to protect home-grown industries from foreign competition or punish countries whose economies may be reliant on the industry being taxed.
