Erases differences between people; everyone becomes more and more similar
Monoculture (result)
One culture all over the world
Assimilation (process)
The culture of a minority group disappears as its members take on the identity of the majority culture (sometimes forcefully)
Marginalization (process)
Excluded from the main group politically, economically, socially
Cultural Revitalization (process)
Asserting and celebrating the identity of a group that has been lost
Affirmation of Identity (process)
Carving out a space in society where the language and culture of the group is accepted (must be the group themselves affirming)
Cultural Diversity (result)
Numerous different cultures and identities co-existing
Opposite of monoculture
Acculturation (process)
Cultural changes that occur when two cultures accomodate/adapt to each other’s worldview (balances 2 cultures, retains identity)
Hybridization (process)
A new culture created from the merging of 2 cultures
Accomodation
An inclusive practice that allows minorities to keep their distinct culture by making exceptions in mainstream culture
Integration
Authentic social/political/economic inclusion of a minority group
Urbanization
The growth of cities and towns as people migrate in search of employment
Universalization of pop culture
The spread of one popular culture (trends, custioms, practices) or monoculture around the world
Media Consolidation/Concentration
Merging of media transnationals that result in concentration of ownership
- reduces diversity of opinion
Media Convergence
Different types of media (print, broadcast) all merge into one source
Digital Divide
Some groups are marginalized as they don’t have access to technology
