Globalization and Behavior Flashcards
How marginalization is relevant?
When a person experiences identity confusion as a result of simultaneously losing faith in their local culture and feeling excluded from the global culture, it leads to a sense of marginalization.
Hikikomori
Anti-social syndrome primarily found in Japan where individuals lock themselves into their rooms for prolonger periods of times, at least six months.
3 characteristics of Hikikomori
- No motivation to work or study
- No signs of other psychological disorders
- Social withdrawal for at least six months
Berry & Sam’s Acculturation Model
- Integration (Positive attitude towards global culture + positive attitude towards local culture)
- Separation (Negative attitudes towards global culture + positive attitudes towards local culture)
- Assimilation (Negative attitudes towards local culture + positive attitudes towards global culture)
- Marginalization (Negative attitudes towards both)
Methodological issue of operationalizing variables in Globalization
The phenomenon of globalization is complex making operationalizing variables related to globalization difficult. If it is difficult to measure the extent of globalization in a country, then it is difficult to measure its effect on the local people.
How globalization has impacted sampling bias
Most participants in psychology research have been WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) so research into globalization has meant a richer understanding of the need for more diverse samples and more emic approach.
