- since globalisation we are in a new stage of modernity
- the enlightenment project is still continuing

A
- giddens – two main features:
- disembedding — social relations are being lifted out of local contexts of interactions
- reflexivity — tradition and custom no longer guides to how we behave
- culture is becoming increasingly unstable

What does late modernist Beck believe?
A
- late modernity has been made by humans in a way that means we are all exposed to huge risks. He calls this risk society
- science can provide us with plans to reduce these risks and protect us from them

- marxists agree that we are in the enlightenment project
- we have moved from modernity to postmodernity
- postmodernity is a new phase of capitalism

- marx thought the enlightenment project would result in a revolution however more recent marxist theories focus on how capitalism has been strengthened

- the nation state – countries were powerful and different from eachother
- capitalism – industrialisation leading to increasing wealth for those who owned means of production
- rationality and science – enlightenment period saw science replacing religion
- individualisim – people had more freedom to choose their course in life

A
- scientific knowledge is no longer the truth
- they believe that science is one of many possible truths
- postmodernists believe in hyper-reality where nothing is real
- truth is subjective

A
- believes in simulcra which is:
- postmodernist societies are based on buying and selling knowledge in the form of images and signs
- these signs have no relation to physical reality making it difficult to distinguish between image and reality

- assuming all beliefs are true can be dangerous and offensive
