According to left realists how has relative deprivation caused by globalisation? What has this led to an increase in?
-Left realists argue that relative deprivation in the West is partly caused by globalisation and the exporting of jobs to the developing world. This has led to unemployment in the west, alongside a wealthy consumer culture.
-This has led to increased crime. Crime rates are higher in former industrial areas(I.e.Detroit, former motor city).
According to left realists how has westernisation increased crime internationally?
What does link to in beliefs?
-While crime like international terrorism is certainly facilitated by the globalisation of technology, communication and travel, some argue that it is a direct reaction to globalisation, and especially the idea of cultural imperialism.
-This is linked to the idea of Fundamentalism in beliefs.
What theory implies that audiences are passive and simply consume messages from the media?
What did the Bandura’s bobo Doll study illustrate?
What real life examples show children influenced by violent media?
-The hypodermic syring model. A dated theory(trying to explain the impact of Nazi propaganda) it is still considered relevant re: children.
-A psychological study that showed children copied violent behaviour of adults.
-Jamie Bulger murder(the killers copied acts from a horror film they watched.)
What is Desensitisation?
Why is this criticised?
-The idea that repeated watching of violent media desensitises the viewer and so they are less shocked/appalled by violence.
-This is criticised because milions of people play video games without committing crimes. Also people can be sensitised by violent media(have more understanding of the consequences.
What is deviancy amplification?
Whose study is this fundamental to?
How does media reporting increase devinace?
What contemporary example shows this?
-This is the idea that media reporting of deviant behaviour can actually ‘amplify’ the deviant behaviour.
-Stan Cohen’s ‘Folk Devils and Moral Panics’.
-Media reporting increases deviance both through labelling the offenders(turning them to ‘folk devils’ who may internalise the label) and through effectively advertising and romanticisng the actions.
-2011 riots: the intial protests were local but subsequent nationwide protest would not of happened without reporting. While reporting was all negative soem viewers were still attracted by the excitement and possible lucrative opportunity. Others may of felt left out.
