globalised crime Flashcards
transnational organised crime - arms trafficking
illegal supply of weapons to criminal organisations that aren’t supposed to have weapons e.g guerrilla groups - groups in country opposed to gov and aim to use violence to overthrow gov.
transnational organised crime - people trafficking
illegal transportation of people from country to country for: illegal work, trafficking of human organs. Illegal immigrants - smuggling people from LEDC to MEDC and forcing them to work - 21st century slaves
transnational organised crime - trafficking of endangered species
poachers kill baby animal’s parents to capture baby animal and sell abroad as ‘exotic pets’ or kill and sell elephant tusks or ivory.
global causes of crime - taylor
globalisation enabled large transnational corporations to relocate factories to LEDCs where wages are lower - caused widespread unemployment and poverty among w/c and these people are targeted by mass media with consumerist messages - causes relative deprivation which, combined with material deprivation causes crime.
unregulated global free market enables companies to recruit staff on ‘flexible’ contracts for less than minimum wage or working illegally without H&S laws.
taylor criticism
fails to explain why only some people turn to crime when majority are still law abiding
global causes of crime - hobbs and dunningham
globalisation changed way crime is organised - glocal crime
in past crime organisations were localised, however new forms of organised crime involve individuals with contacts acting as a hub around which loose-knit networks form and collaborate on mutually beneficial criminal activity on international level
new forms of organised crime - glocal crime; locally based with global links
hobbs and dunningham criticism
ignores extent to which crimes are still local
