ethnicity and crime Flashcards
OCS are accurate - lea and young
crime caused by relative deprivation, marginalisation and s/cs
e/ms more likely to be unemployed so suffer relative deprivation - can’t afford consumer products promoted by the media - respond by forming s/cs which lead to utilitarian crimes like robbery and theft.
e/ms tend to be marginalised so lack organisation to represent views in society - feel frustrated - leads to non-utilitarian crimes such as violence.
argue police methods not based on police stereotypes. as black people have higher rates of criminalisation than asians, police are not racist.
lea and young criticism
possible police stereotype asian and black people differently
OCS are inaccurate - gilroy
black criminality = myth created by racist stereotypes and CJS is racist - over-represent black people as criminals
in former british colonies black people resisted british empire and fought for independence, once they came to UK and faced racism they used same resistance methods to fight against racism - black crime is form of political resistance against racist society
gilroy evaluation
1st gen immigrants were law abiding so couldn’t have passed on resistance methods to their children
OCS are inaccurate - holdaway
institutional racism - police officers developed distinctive working values and prejudices as result of nature of their job which are passed on through canteen culture
police work is often dangerous and unpredictable so officers develop culture to help deal with this where there’s jokes used to cement solidarity and a thirst for conservatism and racism - impacts police practice
OCS are accurate - new right
murray most black children brought up in LPFs - fail to socialise so children fail in edu and turn to crime
