The greatly increased movements of ideas and beliefs across national boundaries.
What played a central role in globalisation?
Postmodern society by the media and information technology.
What does the media and information technology do?
It saturates us with images and messages from around the globe, compressing time and space to give us instantaneous access to ideas and beliefs of previously remote places and religions.
What does the idea that religious ideas have become ‘disembedded’ mean? (example)
The media lift them out of physical churches and move them to a different place and time. E.g. the ‘electronic church’ and televangelism disembed religion from real, local churches and relocate it on the Internet, allowing believers to express their faith with physically attending church.
What does it mean for religion to be de-institutionalised?
It is detached from it place in religious institutions, floating in cyber-space.
What has religious ideas now become?
A cultural resource that individuals can adapt for their own purposes.
