globalisation, modernity and PM Flashcards
globalisation caused by 4 things -
- technological changes
- economic changes
- political changes (Ohmae - borderless world in which TNC’s have largest power, state cant reg)
- changes in culture etc
PM knowledge
Can never tell if something is really true or false, science is bollox, Marxism is bollox. All is true to them, but not to anyone else.
Baurdrillard - Simulacra
Signs no longer have any relation to reality, they just exist. Baurdrillard calls these signs simulacra, e.g. TV article about fictional character, sign about a sign.
Calls this hyper-reality, signs appear more real than reality itself. However as not real they are meaningless.
Baurdrillard
We have lost the ability to improve society as we don’t know whats real or fake to even start.
Eval of PM
- ignores digital divide
- ignores inequality
- Harvey (political choices do help people)
Giddens
Reflexivity -
As tradtion has less impact, we don’t have fixed paths anymore (don’t follow dads job e.g.) so we have to constantly reflect on our actions in the light of new info.
This causes us to always reevaluate and society is unstable, this causes the rapid change in late modernity
Beck
SAY SOMETHING FUCKING NEW YOU DAFT CUNT
RISK SOCIETY - who would’ve fucking thought it:
- we’re in a risk society where we are constantly scared of issues.
- Agrees with reflexivity.
- Beck is sceptical of science as brings risk
Isnt she fucking boring
Eval of moderntiy
Rustin - capitalism and its pursuit of profit causes risk not us or technology
marx view of PM
thinks it brought about Flexible accumulation - flexibile workers and a niche market
Harvey and Jameson
Flex Accum has caused w/c to be weakened and other pressure groups take their place, e.g. environmenalists.
They have little power but hopefully they will make a rainbow and join together.
