cultural homogenisation
losing aspects of culture and fighting to keep it as society is dominated by one culture.. could become cultural resistance as we prevent the spread of global ideology
problems in defining globalisation
Wiseman - term globalisation may be misused and misunderstood and therefore needs careful consideration when being defined in sociology.
- assumptions it happens at an even pace
- assumption that it leads to cultural homogenisation
- assumes only economic/political/cultural process
- assumes globalisation results in social change towards postmodern characteristics such as choice.
- assumes its a positive process.
Post modernism ao1
- Hart - fragmentation of identity, pick n mix culture, no restrictions on identity. links to concept of cyborgs
- Helps build connections, enhancing social capital, existence of support groups eg mumsnet. supported by ‘why we post- social media on a canal’
- increase in diversity, traditional ideas are no longer fixed.
postmodernism ao3
turkle - unhealthy attached to devices- we are ‘alone together’. we perfect ourselves online and create a false perception of ourselves.
garside- children more difficult to protect from cyber bullying & sexual abuse, internet isn’t regulated. supported by ‘why we post-twitter beef’ - info spreads quickly and reaches more people.
digital gap - people are excluded from dfoc so not everyone has the privilege of building communities etc. ind become marginalised.
loss of national identity- if we become more immersed in a global culture and pick n mix we dont have a strong sense of national identity
