1983-1992 was declared the ‘decade of disabled persons’ by the UN to bring cultural change on a global scale in line with the UN convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNDHR)
Since then, there has been a shift in cultural attitudes in the USA and elsewhere. The global media has helped tun the Paralympic Games into one of the world’s biggest sporting events, with the participation of 159 nations.
