GLOBALISATION and CRIME Flashcards
NEW TYPES of CRIME:
- DRUGS TRADE
- HUMAN TRAFFICKING
- CYBER CRIME
-TRANSNATIONAL ORGANISED CRIME
DRUGS TRADE:
often cultivated in THIRD WORLD countries such as
COLOMBIA, which have LARGE IMPOVERISHED POPULATIONS so drugs is an ATTRACTIVE TRADE
as it requires LITTLE INVESTMENT but COMMANDS HIGH PRICES
especially in THE WEST.
HUMAN TRAFFICKING:
linked to PROSTITUTION or SLAVERY and can include the SELLING HUAN BODY PARTS. It is estimated that up to HALF A MILLION people are TRAFFICKED to WESTERN EUROPE ANNUALLY.
CYBER CRIME:
developed from the growth of TECHNOLOGY, it can take on many forms: CYBER FRAUD, CYBER THEFT and CYBER TERRORISM.
Its a TRANSNATIONAL CRIME as the HACKER can be in one country hacking a system in another.
TRANSNATIONAL ORAGNISED CRIME:
growth of ORGANISED CRIME NETWORKS based on ECONOMIC LINKS.GLENNY calls this the ‘McMAFIA’: developed due to the FALL OF COMMUNISM and DEREGUKATION of GLOBAL MARKETS. Additionally the OLD SCHOOL ‘ITALIAN MAFIAS’ began to DISPERSE around the world, especially the USA
IMPACT of GLOBALISATION on CRIME
INCREASED OPPORTUNITY
GLOBAL RISK CONSCIOUSNESS
MORE INEQUALITY
INCREASED OPPORTUNITY:
Growing globalisation, TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS and
COMMUMICATIONS has led to NEWER TYPES OF CRIME as well as NEW WAYS in which to carry out crime. Places like the DARK WEB allows criminals to COMMUNICATE and CONDUCT crimes UNDETECTED. Additionally crimes can be committed in one nation whilst the criminal is in a different country.
GLOBAL RISK CONCIOUSNESS:
(BECK)
the INCREASED movement of people has given rise to ANXIETY amongst WESTERN POPULATIONS over the RISK OF CRIME and the NEED to protect BORDERS. The MEDIA’s negative coverage of IMMIGRANTS (‘TERRORISTS’) has LED to HATE CRIMES against EM in the UK.
MORE INEQUALITY:(TAYLOR)
globalisation has led to CHANGES in the PATTERN and EXTENT of crime, giving FREE REIGN to MARKET FORCES, globalisation has created GREATER INEQUALITY and RISING CRIME. TNCs have turned MANUFACTURING to LOW WAGE COUNTRIES: producing JOB INSECURITY and POVERTY, encouraging people, especially the POOR, to turn to CRIME eg LA, de-industrialisation led to GROWTH of DRUG GANGS.
EVALUATION:
+ useful in linking global trends in the economy to the changing pattern of crime
- doesn’t adequately explain how such changes make people criminal eg not all POOR people turn to crime.
