Globalisation: 2.3 - RUMming To Karachi Flashcards
RUM is not an unstoppable force: Infrastructure
Infrastructure must develop to cope with increasing population e.g lack of housing leads to informal settlements like Katchi Abadis in Karachi
Too many people -> services are strained and become less efficient, e.g Karachi has 1,000 new cars added daily to congested roads, but they have no official public transit system
RUM is not an unstoppable force: Employment
Too many people means not enough jobs, so people turn to crime and the informal sector to survive, which puts off TNCs from investing
RUM is an unstoppable force: affluence
Income is higher in urban areas like Karachi
Cities have a larger population density -> larger workforce -> attracts TNCs trying to outsource production/set up offshore factories -> TNCs invest and set up services
90% of multinational corporations in Pakistan have their HQ in Karachi
RUM is an unstoppable force: more stable economy
Better economy in urban areas means more investment in services like healthcare, education, and transport -> better QoL
BUT: healthcare delivery is mostly private (no NHS) and most clinicians practice with 0 accountability (not safe)
