Globalisation Flashcards
What are two rural push factors for Mumbai?
Rural poverty
Low wage and unreliable work due to the vulnerability of subsistence farming to drought and flooding
What are three urban pull factors for Mumbai?
Outsourcing to India has caused a high supply of call centre worker jobs meaning that there are opportunities for consistent and regular wages.
Supposedly safer housing however this may be a misconception due to 60% of Mumbai’s residents living in slums.
Access to services such as healthcare and education which would not be possible in rural locations.
What are three social challenges in Mumbai caused by rural-urban migration?
60% of Mumbai’s residents live in slums such as Dharavi. This means that they have a lack of access to clean water sanitation.
Crime is common in slums (pickpockets and organised begging).
Churchgate station has around 8-10 deaths a day due to people hanging out of doors or on rooves. This indicates the lack of education and government intervention in Mumbai.
What are two environmental challenges in Mumbai caused by rural-urban migration?
Water pollution: 77% of households suffer from poor water quality.
Traffic congestion: there are more than 22 million registered vehicles in Mumbai which contributes to noise and air pollution.
What is the Korowai tribe?
A small tribe of 3000 people who are hunter gatherers fishing in the Becking River.
How has the Korowai tribe’s built environment changed?
Traditionally they lived in wooden longhouses. They were then encouraged to relocate to small villages with clay bricks.
How has the food changed as a part of the cultural norms?
Traditionally (as hunter gatherers) got their own food and drink from hunting and fishing. Now sugary drinks such as Coca Cola are available in villages.
How has traditional music changed in the Korowai tribe?
Traditionally pig-skin drums were used for music but now the use of televisions and radios has eradicated traditional music.
How has clothing changed in the Korowai tribe?
Traditionally wore loincloth and now wear shorts and t-shirts.
How has the natural environment been exploited near the Beking River?
Over-exploitation of sago palms near the villages.
Deforestation
Certain species are threatened due to being overhunted.
Two examples of where certain countries have attempted to resist cultural change.
France - 40% of all broadcasting must be French.
China - ‘the Great Firewall’ blocks any information I unfavourable of the government. Also you cannot access the BBC or Facebook.
How has cultural diffusion benefited minority groups?
25% of disabled people are employed in China (gives a stigma about the attitude towards disabled people in China) BUT China then went on to come 1st in the 2012 paralympics which shows how global attitudes towards minority groups improves with cultural diffusion.
Rural-urban migrants in developing countries are exposed to equal opportunities for disadvantaged groups so become confident in challenging the treatment of women/LGBT and other minority groups in their home region.

Tradition, food, religion, language
