Problems of Cotton Farming?

A

Hazardous chemicals (banned in e.g. the UK but used in many ELDCs) pollute water supplies and harm wildlife habitats and soils. It can also harm people. 8506 litres of water (irrigation and rainfall) are needed on average to grown enough cotton for 1 pair of jeans. More than 50% of topsoil from all farmland was lost in the last century (blown away or washed away), meaning a lot of farmers lose lots of money.

A

Social problems include child labour, and debt or “bonded” labour in which farm workers or their families are forced to work to pay off; long hours and inadequate pay. Falling world prices mean many cotton farmers are falling into debt.
