Folkways= routine conventions Mores= Seen as central to the functioning of society

Religion, political philosophy, economic philosophy, education, language, social structure

Basis of characteristics such as family background, occupation, and income. Social mobility= extent to which individuals can move out of strata into which they are born Case system= closed system of stratification in which social position is determined by the family into which the person is born class consciousness= refers to people perceiving them-selfs in terms of their class background, shows their relationship with members of other classes.
Hofstede isolated 5 dimensions used to discribe the difference in cultures
- power distance
- individualism vs collectivism
- uncertainty avoidance
- masculinity vs femininity
- long term vs short term orientation
Power distance
may categorize a culture based on the degree to which upper class is separated from lower class
Uncertainty avoidance
cultures with a low tolerance tend to create laws, rules, and regulations to control behaviour. Cultures that value freedom would tend to have fewer laws and regulations
Masculinity vs Femininity
some cultures there are significant differences in how men and women are viewed and treated. (clothing, job, opportunities, human rights)
Cross cultural literacy is in reference to what?
doing business in different cultures requires adaptation to conform within the value system and norms of that culture. Adaptation embraces all aspects of an international firm and operations in foreign countries.
Ex: how deals are negotiated, appropriate incentive and pay system for sales people, structure of organization , name of product, relationship between managment and workforce, promotions.
Cultural and business ethics. Are they universal or cultural bound?
many ethic principles are universal some are culturally bound.
