Global Warming Flashcards
1
Q
how do greenhouse gases retain heat?
A
their molecular polarity makes them lopsided and bounce around; the infrared waves get trapped in between them and warms up the environment.
2
Q
how global warming affects ice
A
declining sea ice; melting of ice alters the salinity of oceans (land and sea ice mix), impacting density and current. permafrost (frozen rock and soil) melt and release methane gas into the atmosphere.
3
Q
how global warming affects the sea
A
rising sea levels due to thermal expansion, threatening to low coastal islands. ocean acidification due to increase in carbon dioxide.
