Global Systems Flashcards
What does interdependent mean?
- countries are starting to reply on eachother more due to globalisation
What are the 4 ways counties are interdependent?
- Economic - rely on each other for economic growth
- Political - solve global issues (climate change)
- Social - migration
- Environmental - environment/global commons
What problems can interdependence cause?
- can create inequality between countries and people
- usually causes benefits (more wealth and power) to developed countries
What is the dependency theory?
- core and periphery model
CORE = HICs, have more money and power
PERIPHERY = LICs/NEEs
What can flows do?
- some flows can slow down interdependence if they are not equal
Unequal flows of people - inequalities, conflict and injustice
INEQUALITIES - less developed countries loose skilled workers
CONFLICT - low skilled workers are happier to work for lower wages, companies then lower waged for everyone
INJUSTICE - dangerous conditions for migrant workers
Unequal flows of money - inequalities
INEQUALITIES - foreign aid can create dependency
CONFLICT - FDI can cause conflict between foreign companies and local people
INJUSTICE - companies may pressure governments of less developed countries to pass laws that make it cheaper to invest there
Why do developed countries dominate the most?
- most technology is owed by developers countries = mainly flows from developers to less developed countries
- developed countries can often afford the newest technology =. Can therefore make products cheaply and have better access to information and services
