two black US (john carlos) athletes caused political controversy by raising their hands when collecting their medals; black power salute, for this they were kicked out the games and never represented the USA again

11 israeli hostaged were killed after a failed rescue attempt and the games were suspended for the first time ever(1 day)

USA boycotted as they protested at the invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union which occured in ‘79. less sports even happened and 65 countries didn’t participate

boycotting by the soviet union; due to fears over security. 14 countries didn’t participate

+if team does well reflects well politically, success gives good impression of government, political parties may co-operate
-high costs, protest, terrorism reflect badly on politics

playing a game to predetermined results, usually involves bribes
what is spot betting
organisations/individuals put on specific part of the game which won’t necessarily impact on the result
what is racism
negative actions towards people who are perceived as different; usually discrimination
