A

In 1896 Baron Pierre de Coubertin visited Britain and liked the features of armature sport. He combined this with his knowledge of the ancient Olympics to form the modern Olympics.

What is the British Olympic association?

A

Formed in 1905 it is responsible for the planning and execution of the British Olympic teams and their participation in the games. It is also responsible for developing the Olympic movement throughout the UK.

Overview of the Belin 1936 Olympics:

A

The Olympics were used by Hitler to promote propaganda for the Third Reich, Hitler trained athletes full time and had a Olympic team that all matched the ‘aryan race’ an example is Luz Lang a world class long jumper. He was beaten by Jesse Owens a black African American won the long jump as well as 3 other gold medals. Hitler refused to place the gold medal around his neck or shake his hand.

A

South Africa’s invitation was withdrawn due to the apartheid regime. Two African-American athletes protested to the world during the 200m medal ceremony about the lack of civil rights and segregation of black people in the USA. The two athletes were Tommie Smith and John Carlos. They both wore black gloves Smith on his right hand to represent black power in America and Carlos on his left hand to represent black unity. They also both wore black socks and no shoes to represent black poverty in America.

Overview of the Munich 1980 games

A

A day before the games began 8 Palestinian terrorists entered the Olympic village and seized 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team. The terrorists demanded that 234 Palestinian that were being imprisoned in Israel were released. German authorities attempted a rescue mission however it failed and all hostages and 5 of the terrorists were killed, three other terrorists were injured. The IOC made the decision to continue with the games after being postponed for one day. A memorial was held and flags were flown half mast.

Overview of the Moscow 1980 games?

A

In December 1979 soviet union forces invaded Afghanistan and the USA responded by stating that they would boycott the Olympic games if Soviet troops did not withdraw within a month. In the UK each individual sport could choose if they wanted to boycott or not. Hockey, fencing and equestrian teams all chose to boycott the games.
