What are ethics?
Rules that dictate an individuals conduct, and a set of rules that people are judged by
What is deviance?
Unacceptable behavior within within a culture, any behavior that differs from social norms
What often causes deviance in athletes?
A drive to win or win at all costs attitude
What does the process of blood doping?
Roughly 2 pints of blood are removed from the athlete several weeks before the event which is then frozen and then unfrozen and re injected back into the performer 1 to 2 days before the event.
What are the benefits of blood doping?
- Increased RBC count
- Increased HB
- Increased O2 transport
What is the main sports where blood doping occurs?
endurance sports e.g running + cycling
What are examples of PED’s and what do they do?
Anabolic steroids - allow performers to train harder for longer and increases strength and aggression
Beta blockers - Control HR and keep performers in a calm state
Stimulants - Increased alertness by stimulating the brain
Why are some supplements legal in sports?
As they do not dramatically increase performance or dramatically reduce health
What are the advantages for taking legal supplements?
- They aim to improve muscle building, increase stamina, aid in weight control, improve flexibility and aid recovery.
What are the disadvantages of taking legal supplements?
- some supplements may contain banned substances and may have long term health implications
- can cause philosophical conflict as some people argue for and against their use
What are the reasons why athletes may use illegal drugs and doping?
- Pressure to succeed from coaches, family, other performers and themselves
- political pressure to perform well for their nation
- monetary rewards for winning
- can also be taken to ‘level the playing field’ with the view that everyone is taking them
What are the consequences of illegal drugs and doping in sport?
- can damage health and well being
- sports that have had high rates of drug use have a tainted reputation which reduces sponsorship opportunities such as cycling

What are the strategies that can be used to stop illegal drugs and doping?
- WADA provide a list of banned substances and help individual countries with their anti-doping programs and help to fund research.

Intense physical force that is directed towards harming another individual or group of people.
What are the causes of violence in sport?
- The competitive nature of sport creates a ‘win at all costs’ attitude that can cause performers to use aggression or violence to try to win
- Physical sports like rugby can cause over arousal leading to increased chances of violence occurring.
- Drugs and alcohol can cause violence in spectators.
- rivalries can lead to increased tension and therefore a higher chance of violence.
