Baron Pierre De Coubertin visited Welnock and saw an amateur sporting festival that was there to make moral and physical improvements. He saw the ‘cult of athleticism’ that came from public schools and decided to make the modern Olympic Games
What were the aims of the modern Olympic Games?
Promote moral and physical development
Give athletes from around the world a fair opportunity to participate
To promote education through sport
What where the values of the modern Olympic Games?
Encourage effort: striving for excellence
Preserve human dignity: demonstrating respect
Develop harmony: Celebrating friendship

Made for disabled war veterans in 1948 (WW2)

What is the International Olympic committee?
Non government sports organisation founded 23rd June 1984 by Lausanne Thomas Bach
Created by the Paris congress
They decided Russia couldn’t compete due to drugs
They want to build a better world using sport
They protect the value of the games and select the location of the games each time
What is the British Olympic Association?
It’s the national Olympic committee for the UK and Northern Ireland

Some areas of the country will see no benefit such as liverpool in 2012
Some areas do not benefit from transport or infrastructure
Some people moved out of their homes and forced to relocate (Brazil 2016)

May increase profile and popularity of minority sports
New venues lead to positive legacy
Increase funding for sports for example the 2015 ruby World Cup saw an increase in lottery funding for facilities
Improved commercialisation of the sport
