Global pattern of urban change
The world is becoming increasingly urbanise with more and more people living in towns and cities. Have example, in 19 50,30% of the worlds population was urban by 2014. It was 54%.
Urbanisation is one of the most important and challenging trends for the future
Urban trends in different parts of the world, including H ICs and LICs
Richer HICs – these countries are highly urbanised with 75% of the population living in urban areas urbanisation in these regions, are slowing down in some countries that has a reverse flow of people/counterurbanisation
In LIC is still predominantly rural example, Africa, 40%, however, in these regions their are experiencing the fastest rates of urbanisation
Factors affecting the rate of urbanisation

Poor harvest, resulting in shortages of food
Limited opportunities for well paid employment
Limited services, e.g. water, electricity, healthcare school
Issues associated with climate change, such as soil, erosion, desertification, floods, and drought
Poor transport, infrastructure

Prospect of better paid employment
Large market for goods and services, e.g. Street vendors
Better school in healthcare
Better transport facilities and access to services, e.g. water and electricity
Friends and family already living in urban areas
Natural increase
Many people living in towns and cities particularly new migrants are aged 18 to 35. This leads to a high birth rate in high rate of natural increase in people moving to urban areas. This trend is likely to increase as the population structure becomes more youth, full
The emergence of mega cities
Recent trend of urbanisation is the growth of megacities
