Asylum seekers
A person who seeks entry into another country by claiming to be a refugee
Disapora
The spread of an ethnic or national group from their homeland e.g. Kurds from Kurdistan
Economic migrants
A person who moves from another country, region, or place, involving a permanent or semi-permanent change of residence, to improve their standard of living or job opportunities
Emigration
Out-migration of people from a country, which involves permanent change of residence
Immigration
In-migration of people into a country, which involves a permanent change of residence
International migrant
stock
The number of people born in a country other than that in which they live. This also includes refugees
Intervening obstacles
Physical, economic, social and political factors which may disrupt or terminate a migration at any point between origin and destination
Migrant remittances
Money transferred from one country to another, sent home by migrants to their family, friends and community.
Multiplier effects
The process by which a new or expanding economic activity in an area creates additional employment as its employees have money to spend on goods and services. As the wealth of an area increases it stimulates more economic activity
Net migration
Difference between the number of people moving permanently into an area and out of that area
Pull factors
Positive attributes of a place or destination which attract migrants
Push factors
Negative attributes of a migrant’s place of origin which force a migrant to leave.
Refugee
A person who has moved outside the country of their nationality or usual domicile because of genuine fear of persecution or death.
Irregular migrant
A person who has moved across an international boarder without authorisation
