Give five examples of effects on individuals
A
- 2,300 refugees from region drowned 2015
- People radicalised by media and lots of Brits teens are recruited
- Sweden accepting 77% of Syrian refugees who can work immediately
- Some countries not accepting refugees: Hungry, Slovakia “Christian refugees only.”
- Many Syrian girls can’t get to school, and kids are being taught in different languages.

Lebanon:
- Hosts 500,000+ refugees from the Palestine
- Armed group “Hezbollah” linked to Assad
- Syria Rebels have fired rockets at east Lebanon area
Syria
- 7 million displaced people
- Homs Syria’s 3rd largest city. Changed hands several times in East. Assad vs IS vs Rebels. Most of the old city has been destroyed
Turkey
- about 1.9 million refugees
- Kobane, town on Syria/ Turkey border heavy fighting
- wants a safe zone within Syria for refugees
Lebanon+ Turkey+ Jordan have 1 million refugees

Effects of the war in Syria
A
-Businesses pull out- lack of investment and less trade
-break down of law and order- anyone with guns in charge, mostly men
-civil society break down- ruined infrastructure (roads, hospitals, schools)
-IS rules large part, blown up palmyra and historical artifacts
Assad only rules western Syria near cost

- Home grown terrorism, 600+ from uk, jihadi brides
- continued calls for UN to act, ceasefires? Peace Talks?? Sept 2015- UN report on violence against women, UNHCR/WHO/UNICEF- running on less than half of promised money promised by in members
- migrant crisis, 200,000 to EU since Jan, criminal traffickers

- “immigration” #1 voted issue, some resent infusions- 50,000 refugees to Greece in July
- EU pay £6000 per asylum seeker, EU plan 30,000 in 2 years
- UK government to take 20,000 in 5 years
- huge strain: especially in Greece, Bulgaria, etc Stresses on economy, political backlash

Give three effects of the war on individuals.

- Poverty- losing homes, can’t work, no food or clothes
- Disease- overrun hospitals, poor sanitation spreading illness, left untreated
- Isolation- families broken, 250,000 dead, I million untreated, while towns isolated
- Violence- civilians abandoning morals, terrorists, fighting, massacres.
- Jobs- lack of money, lack of jobs businesses
- Children- schools destroyed, without education, parents dead
