Global issues and challenges Flashcards
What is the greenhouse effect
The greenhouse effect is the process through which heat is trapped near Earth’s surface by substances known as ‘greenhouse gases.’
What are some natural causes for climate change
Volcanism
solar radiation
What is volcanism
A volcanic eruption that projects so much smoke, it can cover the world making the earth cooler
What is solar radiation
sunspots appear black on the sun and if there are alot, the sun is active but if there arent many, the sun isnt that active
sunspot activity can cause cold and warm periods`
What are the human causes of climate change
population (more demands for consumer goods &more industry)
Industrial revolution (lots of co2 at the time and is still here)
aviation (releases lots of co2)
deforestation (trees keep co2 so cutting them releases more co2)
too much cattle growth (there burp &farts release methane which makes the earth hotter)
power stations (releases lots of co2 emmisions)
cars (petrol cars let out lots of co2 but people are switching)
What are some problems that oceans face
mass plastic pollution
chemicals leaking in the oceans (harms/kills/poisons sea life)
Mass fishing (disrupt the food chain)
What are some human causes for water problems/scarcity
Irrigation (over watering crops)
Extraction (depletes chance of growing crops as it removes ground water)
Pollution (too much garbage so it has to be put in clean water)
What are some physical causes for water problems
Climate change (world gets hotter making water dry up)
Intense heat +droughts (water dries up)
Flooding means dirty water (floods into clean water making people have no clean water)
