World Health Organization (WHO)
Established in (1948) as an agency of the U.N. Their goal is to improve global public health, coordinate international response to epidemics, and eradicating disease. They have the power to order quarantines.
Communicable Disease Perspective
Narrow perspective that focuses on the control of pandemics as a “public good”. Pandemics are controlled through collective action. Examples: Smallpox & Polio
Public Health Perspective
Broad perspective, focuses on non-communicable disease such smoking diseases & diabetes. Prevention oriented, and gauged by longevity.
Epidemiological Transitions: 1st Transition
1st Transition: Started during the creation of agricultural communities. Domesticated animals spread diseases such as the Bubonic Plague. 25M Dead.
Epidemiological Transitions: 2nd Transition
Started during industrial revolution. Urbanization rapidly spreads cholera, smallpox, tuberculosis.
Epidemiological Transitions: 3rd Transition
Started in this current period. New patterns of transmission. Examples: HIV, Malaria, Hepatitis.
Sustainable Development Goals
The U.N. is focusing on no poverty, no hunger, good health and well-being, clean water and sanitation. These can be achieved through conserving food, updating your vaccinations, helping kids read, and donating extra money.
Partnerships between WHO
The Who partners with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Rotary, and The Nippon Foundation to provide effective support in regions.
