Global Commons
The natural resources that fall outside single jurisdictions. For example: The Air, Open Seas, and Antartica.
Tragedy of the commons
States allow use of natural resources at greater pace than resources can be replenished.
Tragedy of the Commons: Solutions
Divide into private property, International Agreements, or Normative Consensus: What constitutes as permissible behavior.
Montreal Protocol
A global agreement in 1987 to protect the stratospheric ozone by reducing consumption of ozone-depleting substances
Kyoto Treaty
An agreement in made in 1997 made to reduce greenhouse gases by 5%. (Co2). The US withdrew.
Copenhagen Accord
An accord that demanded explicit emission pledges by all major countries. There is no clear path toward a treaty with binding commitments.
Paris Agreement
195 Countries signed with the goals of keeping global temperatures below 2% of pre-industrial levels. and to limit the increase to 1.5%
US Unilateralism
An example is when the U.S. withdrew from both Kyoto and Paris Agreement when terms weren’t favorable.
Top-Down Approach (Commands, Strict Rules)
Usually leads to withdraws or drawn out negotiations due to unfavorable contracts.
Bottom-Up Approach
National action plans and uses the act of ‘Naming and shaming’ for compliance.
