Global Hazards Flashcards
What areas of pressure of wind move to?
Areas of high pressure to lie pressure
What direction does warm air go?
Warm air rises
What direction does cool air go?
Cool air falls
Is there low or high pressure at the equator?
Low pressure
Why is there low pressure at the equator?
At the equator the sun warms the earth witch transfers to the air above causing the air to rise. This creates low pressure
What happens as the rising air cools at the equator?
Moves out 30 degrees north and south of the equator
What are the three global atmosphere circulation loops(cells) called?
Hadley, ferral and polar
What are the different climate zones around the world?
Polar-temperatures are low all year long
Temperate - moderate summers and summers
Tropical - temperatures are hot all the time and rainfall is high
Arid (dry) - rainfall is very low all year round and temperatures are hot or warm
What is the climate zones polars temperature like?
Temperature are low all year round
What is the climate zone Temperate climate like?
Moderate summers and winters (low pressure)
What is the climate of the climate zone tropical?
Temperatures are hot all year and rainfall is high (low pressure)
What is the like in an Arid climate zone?
Rainfall is low all year (high pressure)
Why is it windier in some places then others?
High or low pressure form atmosphereic circulation cause wind making some places windier then others
Are wind strong or week in pressure belts?
Week
Are winds strong or week between pressure belts?
Strong
What happens when the difference between high and low pressure is large?
This causes wida that are extremely strong
Where receives the most amount of energy from the sun?
The equator
Where receives the least amount of energy from the sun?
The poles
In places of high pressure are there lots of clouds or fue clouds?
Fue clouds
What is precipitation?
Rain, snow, sleet extra
What makes precipitation happen?
When warm, wet air rises and cools causing water vapor to condense
Where does precipitation happen frequenly?
Rainforsts e.g the Amazon
Is precipitation more or less frequent in low pressure?
More frequently
How much warmer does it have to be then average temperature to be considered extreme weather?
7 degrees
What is an averge summer tempreture in Australia?
33 degrees
What is an averge summer tempreture in the UK?
23 degrees
Does Australia have more or less precipitation then the UK?
Less
How many mm of rainfall in the UK and Australia for it to be considered extremely wet? (two different numbers)?
Australia - 550mm
The UK - 1210mm
How many mm of rainfall does the UK and Australia have to have to be considered an extremely dry year? (two different number)
Australia - 360mm
The UK - 950mm
Who has stronger extreme winds the UK or Australia?
Australia
How to a tropical storm formed
Tropical storm developed when the Seas temperature is 27 degrees Celsius or higher. The warm ocean temperatures means there is a lot of warm moist air to cause extreme precipitation
2.condensation then warms the air rises and cools releasing a huge amount of energy, which makes the storm more powerfull. The rising air creates an area of low pressure which increases surface winds
3.The Earth’s rotation deflects the path of the winds causing the storm to spin
4.The storm gets stronger due to energy from the warm water so wind speed increases
extreme weather conditions are associated with tropical storms
Strong winds in tropical storms are caused by areas of high or low pressure?
Very low pressure
What are the condition that a tropical storm must have to be created
-sea temperatures of 27 degrees of higher.
-5-30 degrees north of south of the equator
- 50 m deep ocean
What is the circulation system?
The movement of air around the world
What is extreme weather?
When weather is significantly different from the usual weather pattern
What is a hight weather belt?
A cold air mass pressing down on the eaeth
What is a high pressure belt?
A warm air mass rising up from earth
What does Contrasting mean?
An obvious difference between two or more things
What does distribution mean?
How spread out something is over an area
What is the definition of drought?
A period when there is much less precipitation over a certain time that is usual for an area, leading to water shortages
What is El Nino?
An event that occurs when weak trading winds blow east to west allow surface temperatures to rise
What is La Nina?
An event that occurs when strong trading winds blowing east to west reduces surface temperatures
What is radiation?
The emmision of energy from the sun as electromagnet waves
What is the coriolis effect?
The way the spinning of the earth makes winds veer to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left I the southern hemisphere
