What are international laws and how do they govern the world?
Rules established by countries through international agreements that are legally binding. Eg: human rights and Labour standards.
What are norms and how do they govern the world?
Accepted standards of behaviour with negative consequences for countries or companies who don’t follow them.
What are institutions and how do they govern the world?
Political and legal organisations that pass and enforce laws.
Give an example of a global institution?
World trade organisation and United nations
What does global governance aim to promote?
-Growth
-Stability
How does global governance promote growth and stability?
Give an example.
-International Laws and norms make countries abide by common rules making conflict less likely increasing stability.
-WTO increased global trade but enforces global rules increasing stability.
What are the problems with the system of global governance?
-If a country doesn’t sign up they don’t have to follow the rules.
-Its difficult to make TNCs and countries comply with the rules especially if they are important in the global economy.
What are the conditions to receive a loan from the IMF or the world bank?
Less developed countries have to implement free trade policies and cut government spending.
Why might the conditions needed for a loan be a problem?
The government has to cut spending which often means less investment to education and health care making the poverty and wealth gap wider.
What is the G7?
The seven wealthiest developed countries.
What is the example of a global institution?
The United Nations
What did the United Nations aim to do?
Establish a peace and fair world
