Antarctic treaty 1959- signed by 53 countries. Only used for peaceful reasons, coop on scientific research and should remain a global common

International whaling commission- ensures a sustainable level of whale population.
- 1994 whale sanctuary set up
1982 whaling moratorium banned all commercial whaling
