global citizenship and the challenge of cultural relativism Flashcards
american anth. assoc. objection to the dec. of human rights
mid 20th cent., didn’t acknowledge the many diff ways a good/just life can be acieved, too ethnocentric.
for decades, common view amongst anthropologists was that universalist moral norms were fanciful + imperialist
cultural objection to cult. relativsm
since cultures aren’t homogenous, stable, or bounded (boundaries are fuzzy), it doesn’t make much sense to talk about them as if they’re natural/inherent
globalisation and cult. relativism
w the world rapidly becoming a single (if morally bumpy/diverse) place, v diff cultures (tribes etc) started wanting to separate from frequently authoritarian cultures (indian women wanting to escape patriarchy)
cosmopolitanism
not universalism, but method of dialogue and respect between drastically diff cultures which can lead to agreement and change. since cult. relativism and universalism aren’t viable, cosmopolitinism important/best option for dealing w difference
