defending equality of outcome Flashcards

Q

argument by phillips

A

liberals say: if we have established equality of opportunities, whats left should be considered a result of your personal preferences
but what if there is no real equality of opprtrtunities? What if the outcome of trying to equalize opp. is women/miniorties are underrepresented in govt/labor market? (these are signs theres no real eq of opps, because there’s inequality of outcome)

Q

should we equalize outcomes for groups?

A

mirror representation: law that says at least –% of parliament/board/etc must be women/migrant/minority/etc. Forced equal outcomes, specific goals/timeframes
active affirmative action policies: stimulates more hiring of women/minorities, not as specific as MR

Q

questioning individ choice as a justification

A
  • Individual preferences (therefore choices) are shaped by enviros; particularly w class
  • outcomes of an indiv depends largely on what society values now; this may be diff tomorrow
  • choices have a cumulutive effect; no one can be expected to foresee all outucomes. And, should we really punish someone for a bad choice?
