defending equality of outcome Flashcards
argument by phillips
liberals say: if we have established equality of opportunities, whats left should be considered a result of your personal preferences
but what if there is no real equality of opprtrtunities? What if the outcome of trying to equalize opp. is women/miniorties are underrepresented in govt/labor market? (these are signs theres no real eq of opps, because there’s inequality of outcome)
problem w assuming equality of opp will lead to eq of outcomes
people are socialized in a certain way, leads to inability to have eq of opp (women socialized to stay at home, men to be ambitious)
women in labor market
they actually say in surveys that they prefer to work part time, so is it a free choice that shouldnt be interfered with?
should we equalize outcomes for groups?
mirror representation: law that says at least –% of parliament/board/etc must be women/migrant/minority/etc. Forced equal outcomes, specific goals/timeframes
active affirmative action policies: stimulates more hiring of women/minorities, not as specific as MR
questioning individ choice as a justification
- Individual preferences (therefore choices) are shaped by enviros; particularly w class
- outcomes of an indiv depends largely on what society values now; this may be diff tomorrow
- choices have a cumulutive effect; no one can be expected to foresee all outucomes. And, should we really punish someone for a bad choice?
