glial cells Flashcards
CNS glial cells
oligodendrocytes, microglia, ependymal cells, astrocytes
PNS glial cells
schwann cells, satellite cells
oligodendrocytes
wrap around axons to form myelin sheath
speeds up process of signal that travels down the axon
microglia
detect damaged or unhealthy neurons in the brain
eat bacteria and display chewed up parts on their cell surface
ependymal cells
forms a barrier between the inner and outer regions of the brain
Secrete cerebral spinal fluid and cilia extending from the cells push the fluid through the brain cavities
astrocytes
Hold neurons in place, get nutrients to them, and digest parts of dead neurons
Cannot generate an action potential, but can still communicate with neurons
schwann cells
forms myelin
satellite cells
hold neurons together, supply nutrients
