Glia and the BBB Flashcards
3 major barriers between CNS and alk other tissues
BBB - huge potential surface area for contact between blood and CSF
Choroid plexus of lateral ventricles - CSF produces here, epithelial choroid plexus cells have tigh junctions
Subdural space - tight junctions prevent leakage
Note the superior sagital sinus is a site of major venous drainage, CSF and blood potentialy could meet here
Barin capillaries
Lined with pericytes and astocyte endfeet.
Pericytes necessary for tight junctions and basement membrane formation.
Pericytes - encapsulate capillaries, could be linked to CO2 detection.
Movement across the BBB
Transcellular lipophillic pathway Active efflux carrier Transport proteins Receptor mediated transcytosis Absorptive mediated transcytosis
Glial and neuroglial cells
Non-neuronal cells whose function is to support neuronal cells both mechanically, physically and ionically around synapses. Insulate axons.
PNS -schwann cells, satellite cells
CNS - astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglial
